History has been defined by scholars, historians and writers from Herodotus, the father of History to Will Durant, an American historian. They defined history in different angles.
Herodotus:
He is considered as the father of history. He was the first who explain the meaning, scope and importance of history. He wrote 9 volumes about Persian wars, it is named as ‘The Persian wars’ tells us the conflict between Persians and Greek people.

He has projected his thoughts on the achievements of great people and important incidents. According to him – It is a record of great heroes and unique events to be remembered by the future generations.

Karl Marx:
He was a German philosopher, economist, historian and voluntary socialist who defined as – It is story of the struggle between the have and have-nots.

ST.Augustine:
He was strongly believed that history was guided by God. He wrote ‘the city of God’ is considered as one of the greatest works in the world. He defined history as a – It is story of the struggle between God (Good) and satan (Evil).

J.B. Bury:
He was an Irish historian and a scholar. According to him ‘It is a science; no less no more’ He argued that, the historian works like a scientist, collect data and valid evidence. He should critically evaluate the subject and bring out the truth without bias.

Arnold Toynbee:

Jawaharlal Nehru:

The study of history is useful and important to man in many ways. Let us understand the importance of the subject.
1. Memory of the past events:
The study of history gives us information about the past incidents. It also gives information about the rise and fall of our heroes. So., it is necessary to understand his surroundings and the world position or situations and it create awareness about the past and guidthe future.

2. It teaches religious tolerance:
