‘Heaven, If You Are Not Here On Earth’ was penned originally in Kannada, by the noted Kannada poet Kuvempu. He wonders that the much revered heaven, if not on earth, where else could be found? If the humans themselves by their thoughts qualities and deeds cannot become Gods and nymphs, who else can be the gods and nymphs, he questions in uncertainty. One can attain divinity and inner beauty by one’s actions and the wherever they are, that place truly becomes heaven. Kuvempu describes nature in graphic detail and paints a beautiful picture with his words.

The streams with a big roar rush along, making surf at the edges of waves when merging with the sea. The gentle sun tenderly spreads the sunshine over the verdant greenery and plants, enveloping them lovingly as if caressing with his soft touch. When we chance upon the fields with their bumper yields under the moonlight, we also see the happy and lovely faces of the farmers.

These sights make earth nothing but heaven. The poet takes in all these wonderful sights, assimilates their beauty and in his colorful narrative, gives the essence of it all in words that others can read and visualize the heaven on earth.

Give an account of the Japanese mania for bowing as described by George Mikes.

In Japan, bowing is almost like a mania. Everybody keeps bowing to everybody else, with great solemnity and natural, inimitable grace. Bowing is akin to shaking hands or kissing the cheek as is normal in the west. It is quainter. more formal, more oriental with complex rules and hierarchies but very much infectious. Foreigners may find themselves bowing, but with amusing, unintentional blunders, either bowing too deeply or not deeply enough or to wrong persons at the wrong places.

The differences in ranks, standing, age, social position are subtely reflected. There are clear cut differences in positions and basic rules inside the family too. But Japanese carry out these complicated. hierarchical rituals without difficult and with great aplomb. Bowing is part of their culture and ingrained in them since birth.

Answer:
Earth University, the brainchild of Vandana Shiva is located at Navadanya Farm, a biodiversity farm, in the lower elevation of Himalayan region of Uttarkhand province in the Doon Valley. Navadanya farm was started in 1994.

Earth University teaches Earth Democracy. In the present world, globalization has intensified multiple crisis and we need to move away from the paradigm of nature viewed as dead matter. We must adopt the ecological pathway and there is no better teacher than nature herself to show us the way. Earth democracy, is nothing but freedom for all species to evolve, within the web of life as equals. It is the responsibility of humans as members of the Earth family, to recognise, protect and respect the rights
of other species. It is high time we shifted our focus from anthropocentrism to the more universally benevolent ecocentrism.

All the species on this planet depend on Earth and Earth Democracy means nothing but everyone’s rights to food and water, to freedom from hunger and thirst. Participants at the farm learn to work with living seeds, living soil and the web of life. There are farmers, school children and people from across the world undergoing training in various eco-friendly courses.

‘The speaker addresses a young lady in her old age.’ Comment on the time sequence used by the poet in ‘When You Are Old’.
Answer:
The poet is a man, who is expressing his deep and undying love for a woman who has so far rejected his advances. He asks the woman to consider what her life would be like when she reaches old age. He believes that no doubt she would reflect upon her youth and lost beauty.

The woman would view her current situation from the perspective of her future self when she was loved. The poet claims he is different from the many who loved her as he loved the pilgrim soul in her. The poet brings a tone of longing and yearning and announces that he did not simply love her for her external beauty but adored her. He says that she may regret the missed opportunities of love. He would always be there for her and watch her among the stars. So, true love is permanent and eternal. There is a contrast between youthful phase and old age beautifully brought about by the poet.

Do you think that ‘The voter’ is right in demanding money to vote for Marcus Ibe? Explain.
Answer:
The village had had five years to see how quickly and plentifully politics brought wealth, chieftaincy titles, doctorate degrees and other honours. Their point was that only the other day Marcus was a not too successful Mission School teacher. Politics had come to their village and he had wisely joined up. The villagers felt that they had underrated the power of the ballot paper. They felt that if Marcus was a poor man, they would be the first to give their papers free. But Marcus today was a great man and did his things like a great man. If they did not ask for money before the elections they could not ask him after the elections. But now was their time and they felt it was foolish to have climbed the iroko tree today and not taken down all the firewood they needed.

Marcus Ibe the Chief, the Honourable Minister for Culture had two long cars and had built himself the biggest house anyone had seen in those parts. The village had neither running water nor electricity, but Marcus had installed a private plant to supply electricity to his new house. He had christened his new house ‘Umuofia Mansions’ and slaughtered five bulls and countless goats to entertain the people on the day it was opened.

After the feasting was over, the villagers told themselves they had underrated the power of the ballot paper before and should not do so again. They were now ready to try it in a different way. They demanded money to vote. This is a mockery of democracy. Roof was a puppet in this mockery. He and his stalwarts conducted whispering campaigns in the night. They were offering money to vote. They were caught in a trap whether it was right or wrong.

Sporting fraternity and sports lovers across the country applauded and felt happy when President Pranab Mukherji handed over the prestigious Arjuna awards to several eminent sports personalities at a glittering function in the national capital recently on the occasion of National sports Day. However, nobody perhaps would have given thought to the creator of the slick and wonderfully created trophies that dazzled in the hands of these well known sporting icons. The unsung hero is Gajendra Prasad Sahu, a painter and sculptor based in Bhubaneswar.

The 53 year old artist has been making the Arjuna Award trophies for the last five years. Not only Arjuna Awards, Sahu is also the creator of well designed Dronacharya, Dhyanchand and Tenzing Norgay trophies that are presented every year by the Union Sports and Youth Affairs

Ministry to an eminent coach, an important hockey player and an individual for bravery respectively. The turning point in Sahu’s life, however came in 2009 when the Ministry of Sports and Youth affairs decided to re-design the trophy for the popular and most sought after Arjuna Award for sporting icons and invited applications from artists across the country.

Sahu responded and sent the sketches of his designs which were approved by the Union ministry. Once the preliminary sketches were okayed, he was summoned to New Delhi to submit his final design, which too was approved and he was assigned the job of making the trophies for the prestigious sports awards every year. He won the job despite stiff competition from individual as well as institutional competitors.

Interestingly, though Sahu creates the most coveted trophies for the Indian sports icons, he never had any personal interest in sports. His works of paintings have found a place in art galleries and exhibitions in different parts of the country.
