Besides, he had gone out of the way of working. He was treated badly. It was not fair. When he was sentenced to death, they ought to have executed him but they did not do it.
That was one thing he did not complain about. Then they sentenced him to imprisonment for life and put a guard to bring his food, but after some time they took him away and he had to fetch his own food. Again he did not complain. Question 14.
Explain the views of the prophet on children and parents in the poem. ‘On Children’.
Answer:
The prophet offers a critique of the usual expectations of parents about their children
and urges them to introspect. A woman who held a baby against her bosom asked the prophet to speak on children. The poet feels that though the children stay with them, they do not belong to them. The parents may give them their thoughts. They may house their bodies, not their souls. The poet uses the metaphor of bows to represent parents and living arrows to children.
Archer refers to God. The poet feels that the archer i.e., God bends his bows so that his arrows may go swift and far. The poem not only focuses merely on the lives of children but also talks about ’ the responsibilities of parents. Parents should not be possessive of their children. God is the original creator of both children and their parents. Parents are mere actors who act on the wish of God. God never discriminates as he loves both the bows (parents) and arrows (children) equally. So, parents should not be possessive of their children.

Question 16.
How is the speaker’s passionate love for his beloved brought out in the poem ‘When You Are Old’.
Answer:
The speaker is visualising his beloved in the future, in her old age, reading through his book of poems, telling about his true love for her, sitting besides a fireplace. Many had loved her beauty and grace in her youth either with true sentiments or superficially, but none did so in her moments of ageing, where she finds herself alone and unattended and uncared for. Her true lover, the speaker, had always loved the changes in her for he was seeing her soul and not her physical charm.
He loved her pilgrim soul which was forever changing with time, a restless spirit seeking something meaningful in life. He would still be loving her when her face in old age is shrunk with sorrowful lines etched on them. He avers that physical beauty is ravaged by time, whereas beauty of soul was permanent and eternal. The indirectly pleads with her to accept his true love in the present.
Question 17.
Write a note on the rivalry between Tammanna and Basavaiah as explained in ‘The Gardener’.
Answer:
In a far-off place there was a man called Tammanna. He had everything. Ten acres of wetland, a comfortable house and people too ready to do his bidding. The most important among all his possessions was his rival Basavaiah. If Tammanna bought four more acres adjacent to his land, Basavaiah also followed suit. If one had 10 friends, the other acquired 15. To begin with, all this looked like healthy competition.
Gradually it rose to such a pitch that there was no land left in the village for them to buy. All land belonged to either Tammanna or Basavaiah. Tammanna had 1000 acres and Basavaiah owned 800 acres. He sent word to Tammanna to sell him 200 acres. Tammanna in turn informed that he was prepared to buy all the land that belonged to Basavaiah. Basavaiah acquired 200 acres of Tammanna’s land forcibly. A fence was built around that land.
Tammanna hit upon the idea of composing all his experience in the form of ballads and singing them. Tammanna was felicitated as the best poet of his times. Basavaiah had no answer to this. One day Tammanna ill. At that point, Basaviah’s spirits were revived. Tammanna felt only his death could destroy Basavaiah completely. He gave up everything and started off. After a few days, Basavaiah passed away as he had no further reason to live.
Question 18.
Trace, the stages of the foot’s transformation as portrayed in ‘To the Foot from its Child’.
Answer:
Nerudas poem works out the contrast between colourful dreams and humdrum reality of life. The poet has used the foot as a metaphor for the child and describes the dreams and realities of life. In the beginning, the child is unaware that it is a foot and would rather be a butterfly or an apple. When it grows, it faces difficulties of life as walking on stones and bits of glasses, ladders and the paths on the rough earth.
After facing all these struggles of life, it ‘ understands that it cannot become a butterfly or an apple. The foot feels defeated when it is inside a shoe, though in the darkness of the shoe, it never sees anything. It is like a blind person in darkness. The foot becomes rough and exposed to the difficulties in life. It knows no rest as it continuously walks through markets, mines and other places. It must work without gender discrimination and till death it has to walk and work without sleep. The foot has to work and walk all life facing challenges not able to realize its dreams and unaware of the bitter truth of life.
