There are 18 mythologies famous in Indian literature. Karma, knowledge, devotion and philosophy and so on many things are depicted here. Thus in mythology ancient India is specially described. The present part of the poem is extracted from Brahmanda-VarahaMarkandeya-Naradeeya-Vishnudharmottaraand Brahma mythologies. Here India’s geological picture is given as it is described in mythology.
1)The land situated north to the ocean and south to the Himalaya is called Bharath (India). The citizens of the land are called as HIR.
2) Manu protected the subjects, he attained the name Bharatha. As Bharatha ruled over this nation, it was called Bharata. The etymology of the term also implies this view.
3) The heaven, salvation, middle (sky – birth of birds) and the end (hell) are gone from here (India). No where in the world duty is constituted to humans.
4) There are nine divisions in Indian continent. They are detached due to ocean and being located far away from one another cannot be reached.
5) Indradveepa, Kasheruman, Tamravarna, Gabhastiman, Nagadveepa, Soumya, Gandharva and Vaaruna are the eight divisions.
6) This is the ninth island, surrounded from ocean. This island is spread in thousand yojanas (1 yojana = 12 km) from south to north.
7) Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Shuktiman, Ruksha, Vindhya and Pariyatra are the seven great mountains of India.
8) Ganga, Saraswathi, Sindhu, Chandrabhaga, Yamuna, Shatadru, Vitasta, Iravathi and Kuhu are the rivers of India.
9) All these rivers are the mothers of the universe and all these yield great success. Such hundreds and thousands of rivers self-dependent and flow to help others.
10) All the rivers with tributaries and Ganga’s tributaries as well flow towards the ocean. All rivers are the mothers of the world and the destroyers of the sins.
11) Kapilateertha, Gograha, Somateertha, Alabu, Mrityunjaya, Krodateertha, Vasuka and Siddhakeshwara are the pilgrimage places of India.
12) Pandya, Keralas, Chola, Kulyas, Setuka, Mooshika, Kshapanika and tribals are the professionals of India (who got their name according to their profession).
13) Hey Narada, this India is the place where it gives fruit for all works. Here people do three kinds of work. (routine work, doing some work due to certain reason, doing some work being desirous).
14) The fruit of good and bad deeds done in India will be enjoyed respectively in the places of enjoyments (heaven).
15) O Brahmin, until the punya decays they enjoy their fruit in other places. Even today gods will to beget in India.
16) Hey king, human gets the prescribed age told by me in all the islands. People by doing good jobs in India get birth in all the islands.
