Prof. A. R. Krishnashastri was like a star in the sky of Sanskrit. Sanskrit is invaluable. His Kannada treatises 2791a, Jemua and so on made him popular. By knowing his life story, we could get inspiration to follow his path.

Childhood :

Shri Krishnashastry was born in 12 August 1890 in a traditional Sanskrit studying orthodox family to parents Shri Ambale Ramakrishna Shastry and Mrs. Shankaramma. K. Krishnashastry’s Sanskrit study started under his father from childhood. He was going to school with his father in his childhood. The Sanskrit hymns, Amara Kosha, Panini’s grammar formulas were flowing from his mouth fluently. He studied in Mysore’s Royal School, Velian Mission School and Maharaja College. He got the discipleship of great scholar like Prof. Hiriyanna, Prof. B.M. Shri, Kanakanahalli Varadacharya and so on in Mysore Maharaja College. The thirst of knowledge, duty conscious way of thinking of these great souls have become an ideal in Shastri’s life.

Affection towards Sanskrit

The affection and respect towards Sanskrit has grown thus His firm and bold words are ‘Sanskrit and the scriptures in that are heritage of our ancestors. We should not destroy that. We have started begging for everything from Western people. If we got there for Sanskrit them that is ruin of the country. If the study of Sanskrit decreases then it is like distancing child from the breast milk of mother. One must learn Sanskrit. The higher study in that is effective. He became an ideal teacher by following his teachers. He was always going to class well prepared. His teaching style was attracting the students. D.V.G. was appreciating

Affection of students His affection on student was very unique. One of his students Dr. K.M. Krishna Rao explains an incident thus ‘Krishna Rao’s friend was in plight. He could not pay his exam fees and he decided to quit writing exam.’ The student had stopped coming to college. Prof. Krishna shastri noticed this for five six days and knowing that student’s financial problem, ordered Krishna Rao to bring him from wherever he is. When he came Krishna Shastri gave him a cheque of required amount for exam. He helped him writing the
exam. He removed his hesitation telling that you take this money as loan and after earning you return it. Then he didn’t forget to tell him that you have much time for exam and study is your duty. Rashtrakavi Kuvempu was also his student. Krishna Shastri was meeting his student without fail whenever he was going to Mysore from Bangalore. He thought that without meeting the student coming back to home is like going to temple and coming from there without seeing God. Having noticed Kuvempu’s talent in initial stage he called him aliofa. Krishna Shastri had big aim of translating Anandavardhana’s Dhwanyaloka to Kannada. But after knowing his own student Dr. K. Krishnamurthy had undertaken that job he happily supported him. He wrote the preface as well.

Contribution to Kannada and Sanskrit

His service in Kannada is very unique. He started serving Kannada literature by establishing Kannada association of like minded. He started a paper called “Prabuddha Karnataka’. He worked as a member of Kannada – English dictionary framing committee. He worked as an editor of Kannada Sahitya Parishat paper. The independent books of Krishna Shastri are रामकृष्णपरमहंस चरितम्, भासकविः (कवि काव्य विमर्शः), संस्कृतनाटकम्, सर्वज्ञकविः, श्रीपतिकथाः, बङ्किमचन्द्रः, भाषणानि लेखनानि Kavana, unpublished book “Ramappa’. The noted point in these books is he has given special attention for unbiased thoughts. Among these बङ्किमचन्द्रः book has got an award of central literature academy which is a feather in the cap for Kannada literature.

Message to students

Friends, we become cultured, give up evil nature. We become forgiving natured and brave, not fearful and cowards. Political dispute is unnecessary for us. We need brightness, bravery, courage and self-respect in the battle of life. Get up, be attentive, march till the goal reaches, read brave stories, let mind be pure always, walk with virtues, be proud of our country and our people. You are students, study is penance for students and give up laziness. You read your country’s history. You think how you can develop your country. Let there be love, unity and let us hope that this message stimulate every human’s life.
