सा शान्तिः Summary in English

Beautiful brow, shiny hair, nice teeth, beautiful colour She’attractive eyed, briefly her every part is beautiful. She, in her youth, twenty years old. She captivated everybody’s heart. Her lotus like face with simple beauty, good dress, virtues, smile and with good behaviour as inexplicable and attractive. She was working in ready-made cloth shop. After seeing her who comes on the steps and without any reason lifting the face, clearly or seeing her face slightly I used to go office.

The fabric shop where she was working was very interesting. No person could see inside the shop from the outside. But sometime she was seen behind the screen folding the dress in special style, like a gorgeous nymph. The doll in a big glass box outside was enthralling by wearing new dress everyday and entertaining people like me though it was not alive and caged in an electric box. The Maniquine seemed like young girl having worn Japanese saree in a decent manner which is available in foreign countries airports and made by hand.

I was going to office on the same road everyday which had become my routine. Suppose she was not seen then my mind was feeling disturbed. Though I was busy in office work but mind was pondering over her. She was dancing in the mind of me during break. Sometimes it becomes a series of worries that who is this girl? Married or unmarried? does she have children? which lucky chap is her husband? and so on questions. Though these questions are not answered they won’t be able to change my feelings.

I was getting inexplicable happiness by beholding her everyday and it was remaining for the next day. One day I saw her talking to a young boy. Immediately I got angry on myself. I couldn’t able to see that scene for long. Is he her husband or brother? But he is strong and handsome. I didn’t close my eyes and stared at him as if I am going to burn him. I never ever behaved like that before. Fortunately I was not Shiva and she was not Rati and he was not Cupid to get into ashes when I observed her closely. Her forehead was empty , Kumkum was not there, and there was no Kumkum in her head. Is she not worth marrying? No, no, why my mind thinks so about her. People tell me there are lots of miracles in this world. But I don’t believe all that, though I didn’t pray God, but one day such miracle occured, she, the beauty of the fabric shop, my dream girl came to my office to meet me.

I was speechless when she was sent to my room by the security guard. I stood silently. I couldn’t be able to see her who was standing in front of me. I don’t know whether she knows or not that I am worshipping her keeping her inside my heart.

I spoke to her gently and having welcomed her obediently asked her “What is the matter? I don’t want her to get hurt. In fact I want her to be happy.

She said ‘I am Shanti, Sundar’s wife’.

It seemed like I was familiar with the name Sundar. Sundar was from my native. A few years back he came to Mumbai. I had met him very first. His father Govind was a best farmer at village.

He had many children. We were landlords and he was just a farmer. Sundar asked me to get a job for him when he met me. He told that he would do any job. I asked him ‘why did you leave the village He told ‘We are six brothers and two sisters. After father’s death income was less. So living became miserable. Fortunately father had got two sisters married when he was alive. Two brothers are willing to stay in the village. Remaining four left the village one by one in which I am the last.

‘Have you studied in school?’ I asked him. He replied – “Yes, I studied till tenth”.

I told him that job is not like our wish, but I’ll try to find a better job for you. Your father worked for us. You meet me after two days.’ Fortunately an employer gave him a work just by listening my words. Then next day itself I had sent Sundar there.

It seems Sundar had accepted the job. But thereafter I didn’t get an opportunity to meet him. Actually I was reluctant to meet him because I thought he may ask some other favour from me. Sundar’s wife Shanthi was standing before me.

At a fraction of second I recalled all the stories of Sundar. Then she, the unknown nymph of fabric shop, the girl who installed in my temple like mind, she the wife of our villager Sundar. Feeling disappointed, but not feeling angry I asked her ‘What you want from me?” She said “My husband wanted to meet you. He had great respect on you, who got a job for him. My husband had a new life in this city due to that job. We wanted to meet and thank you for that. But that day didn’t arrive. “What, what? What happened to Sundar’. ‘Gone. Last year he expired’. “He expired ? Did he have children?’ ‘No, no children’.

I felt very sad. A widow in such young age. ‘Tomorrow’ breaking the silence Shanthi told tomorrow my husband’s death anniversary. I came her to seek the blessing of you. You are his native and landlord.’ Blessing? From such hard hearted landlord? The illusion what I had as a landlord officer broke into pieces. I thought thus “This Shanthi is representative of our culture. I am not for reason. She is living following the great culture.”

I told her taking out a bundle of hundreds notes Please receive for annual death ceremony Sundar was a very virtuous person“. She said ‘I came with a desire of getting blessing from you, not for money’.

Shanthi didn’t receive money. She left my office having saluted me. I wanted to know more about her. But she didn’t give room for that. I had to be thankful to her because she cleansed the dirt of my mind. Now she, not she.
