Introduction
The poetry literature in Sanskrit is very deep and unlimited. The poet’s work is poetry. The poet is foreseer. There are two divisions in दृश्यकाव्यम्, रूपक and उपरूपकम्. उपरूपक has eighteen divisions and रूपक, has ten divisions.
As ancient Sanskrit language is, so modern as well. The play विधिविलसितम is a compiled 1st act of गुरुशापः which is penned by an eminent scholar Dr. K.S. Nagaraj and received this with honour.
(Flashback – In this play, how the great donor and valour Karna gets Bhargavastra by dedicated service to his teacher, is described very well. The guru Parashurama curses him by knowing he is a charioteer’s son. Thereafter how student loving Parashurama himself consoles Karna and blessed him is depicted in the lesson very well.
Characters:
Teacher : Parashuram
Karna : Radheya (lowcast person’s son)
(forest living Parashurama was followed by Karna)
Parashurama : Karna! your warfare is complete. You can go where you want to go.
Karna : Reverend, I am feeling sad to leave your company. I don’t know what I could give as Gurudakshina (A gift to teacher after completion of study). It is very rare getting teacher like you. I have got the discipleship of you due to previous birth’s Punya.
Parashurama : Here I have the special punya. In these two eras, I have had thousands of students. But I never got a student like you.
Therefore today I teach you a secret chant for weapon. Keep up your mind. Are you following the fasting and vrata as I adviced to you?
Karna : Sir, I followed all your advice.
Parashurama : Then you listen (teaches mantra in the ear of Karna) Son! open your eyes and sec.
Karna : (Having opened eyes) Reverend, surprising, surprising
Parashurama : This is the effect of weapon. So it is called as Bhargavastra. Even gods are scared of this weapon. This is the peak of your study. You outshine me who is your teacher.
Karna : (Folding hands, thankfully with choking throat), Sir, affection on an orphan like one is inexplicable. I am the pioneer amidst fortunates. So please tell me, what gurudakshina could I give you? Bless this servant (falls
at the feet)
Parashurama : (Lifting up the disciple) Son, get up. what I do with your gurudakshina who lives in a forest being untouched by materialistic world. Do not feel bad. Though you are determined to give gurudakshina then listen This would be gurudakshina that by using the weapons taught by me, you who has mastered the archery should destroy all, from which they are left mere with names (means you should not get defeat)
Karna : Sir, I always follow your order obediently (Salutes him again and again)
Parashurama : Son, now you go to come back. You shouldn’t deviate from right path. Let everything be good on you. : (Getting up) Sir, I really take oath. I do as you have advised. Your blessing is protection for me (Seeing around, himself) It is very difficult to leave teacher and his abode. I would stand here for a while and proceed. On seeing the beauty of hermitage “I have never seen this before due to busy schedule of archery. The hermitage is shining filled with vedic chants, embellished with meritorious deeds, obedient disciples and colourful with all qualities”. (He nears the teacher who is sleeping and sitting on the ground keeps teacher’s head on his lap) I am blessed by getting such privilege (of serving teacher) before leaving
I don’t have any other work except serving the teacher.
(At that time an insect becomes busy in eating the flesh of Karna’s thigh. Parashurama having opened his eyes half by the touch of hot blood)
Parashurama : Karna, What is this blood? Tell me, what happened here? How come my head is on your lap? (annoyed) Tell me the truth, why did you come to hermitage?
Karna : Sir, I would tell you what happened. Please forgive my faults.
Reverend, an insect called Vajra was drilling my thigh with its stinging organ, was sucking blood and was eating my flesh. But I endured severe pain because of the fear that your sleep could get disturbed
Parashurama : (In rage) Karna! What have you done? Your endurance is beyond the limitation. The virtuous people will not bear such pain even for a second.
Karna : Your word is true.
Parashurama : (angrily) you have become untrustworthy with in a second. You seem to be a liar.
Karna : Reverend, I have not done any unjust work. Sympathetic you need to forgive me.
Parashurama : (doubled angry) wicked, the naturally truthful person would not bear the pain for a second. I have given all weapons to you unthinkingly. Has I have broken the oath. Alas, I am cheated, I placed all my knowledge in unsuitable place (reddening the eyes) at least now you tell the truth.
Karna : (Shivering with fear)
Reverend, I am a low caste person by caste. But getting birth in noble family is God’s decision. I had a great ambition of learning warfare. Therefore I come to your feet and I learnt all the weapons, never for sinful deeds.
Parashurama : This is also a lie. Do not stand before me. Go away.
Karna : (Saluting) Reverend, Please, forgive my fault.
Parashurama : (Laughing)hey! you are a liar. Really you are worthy of my punishment. Karna, who has told the lie, such you are being aimed to curse. Listen carefully.
While hurling the weapons if you feel like low caste person then all your weapons become useless.
This is correct. Flee away from here, otherwise disobedient student. You get another curse. This is the fruit for your sinful act, bear it.
(Karna filled with fear and sad faint falling at the feet of teacher then weeps like child having got consciousness)
(lifting Karna up) console Karna, console yourself. I am unable to take back the curse which is already given. The fate is mighty. You live long. Let your fame spread in all the directions. You do charity work to poor people as much as possible. Be with good conduct. Do not lie anytime. OK, you may go.
Karna : Oh greatest guru, I am blessed, let your blessing purify me. I am, unfortunate is moving
[Again falls at the feet of guru and leave]
Parashurama : (Looking at Karna who is going with sympathetic eyes) Oh, the play of fate. Very virtuous Karna has become my favourite student by his good conduct, but he faced the miserable stage by my curse because he lied. [Exits sadly]
