All of us get angry sometime or the other. Is it good or bad to express one’s anger? Why? Why not? Discuss in pairs.
Answer:
Sometimes it is good to express our anger because only then the other person understands that we have been hurt, and will make amends for the hurt. However, the expression should be done in such a manner that it doesn’t worsen things or hurt the other person in return.

Nothing is solved by such vengeful acts. If genuine anger is suppressed, it will erupt in unnatural acts of violence later. Sometimes, it is not necessary to express our anger if the anger is based on our misunderstanding of certain facts.

Answer:
‘Deceitful’ means ‘deliberately done in order to fool someone’. The speaker pretends to be friendly with his enemy by behaving in a very sweet manner.

c) Why had the speaker “sunned” it?
Answer:
The speaker was afraid to express his anger with his enemy. Hence he pretended to be friendly and happy with him. This pretense only made his anger grow.

III. Paragraph Writing

Discuss, in pairs or groups of 4 each, the answers to the following questions. Note down the important points and then develop them into a paragraph.

Question 1.
How does the poet use the image of a tree to bring out the destructive effect of suppressed anger?
Answer:

  1. The speaker waters his suppressed anger with fears and tears.
  2. He ‘suns’ it with smiles and deceitful wiles.
  3. The tree grows both day and night, and bears a bright apple.
  4. When the foe eats the apple, he dies.

Paragraph: The speaker does not tell his friend that he is angry with him. As a result, his anger grows. His growing anger is traced through the growth of a tree. Just as a tree is watered and provided with sunlight for its growth so does the speaker nurture his anger with fears, tears, fake smiles, and wicked tricks. The tree of anger bears an apple that shines bright like the apple in the garden of Eden. It attracts the friend and he
steals it by night when the speaker was not looking. The result, the apple from the poisonous tree killed the friend. The speaker too dies spiritually for allowing anger to grow and for rejoicing in the death of his friend.

IV. Activities:

Discuss the following in groups of 4 each. One in each group notes down the important points. Share the group’s findings with the neighboring group.

Question 1.
Do you think the speaker was right in being ‘glad’ at his foe’s death? Why? Why not?
Answer:
All along the speaker had been afraid of his enemy and hence had not been able to express his anger. But he was not able to forget his anger too. Therefore he had nurtured it with fears, hypocritical smiles and deceitful wiles. When the enemy ate the poisonous apple and died, the speaker realized that he did not have to fear anyone or pretend anymore. So he was glad at his death. Considering the circumstances in which the speaker lived while the enemy was alive, it was natural on his part to feel ‘glad’ at the enemy’s death. If he had expressed sorrow, it would have been insincerity and pretense on his part.

Question 2.
What has happened to his own garden now with a poison tree? Was he happy in growing a poison tree?
Answer:
The speaker’s own life will definitely not be happy with a poison tree in his garden. His own life has been wasted thinking about the enemy and plotting against him all the time. He has surely not found satisfaction or achieved pride in growing a poison tree which can destroy the enemy. After the enemy’s death, the speaker will be tortured by guilt and shame.

Question 3.
How could he have avoided planting a poisonous tree?
Answer:
The speaker could have expressed his anger with the enemy. He could have talked about the hurt he felt, and asked the enemy for an explanation. This would have given an outlet to his emotions and rendered his mind clear.

Question 4.
Read the 4 rhyming words of stanza 3. Which vowel sound is repeated?
Answer:
The four rhyming words of the stanza are -‘night’, ‘bright’, ‘shine’, ‘mine’. The vowel sound ‘ai’ is repeated.

This is a very powerful, meaningful poem by William Blake. Here he picturises the effects of suppressed anger. When the speaker in the poem is angry with his friend, he expresses it and his anger vanishes. But when he is angry with his enemy, he doesn’t express it but suppresses it. He has various fears about the enemy, and these fears ‘water’ the anger. His apprehensions about the enemy and the consequent tears he sheds, too nurture the anger.

He ‘suns’ the anger, i.e., gives it light and heat to grow better, by indulging in hypocritical behavior. He pretends to be friendly with the enemy, and fools him about his own feelings with smiles and soft deceitful wiles.

Here the poet brings in a concrete image of the anger. The hatred that the speaker nurtures in his heart towards his enemy takes the form of an apple tree. It bears a bright apple which tempt the enemy to come at night and steal the apple.

However, since the tree had been nurtured by the speaker’s angry mind, it has become a poison tree bearing poisonous fruits. Thus, when the enemy eats the apple, he dies immediately. When the speaker comes near the tree in the morning, he sees the enemy’s body stretched out beneath the tree. He is ‘glad’ to see this sight.

Thus, the hatred that the speaker nurtures towards his enemy kills the enemy indirectly by making even the apple tree poisonous, These are the effects of evil thoughts.
