B. Discuss in groups of 4 each the following questions

Question 1.
The story has a galaxy of interesting characters. Which of the characters do you like the most? And why?
Answer:
Some of the interesting characters are Billy, Jim, the doctor, the squire, Long John Silver and Ben Gunn. Each is interesting for his own quality:

Billy for his habit of sitting in a comer of the bar of Admira Benbow Inn, drinking rum and singing, “fifteen men on the dead man’s chest. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!”

Jim for his alert responses at all times, whether it is after Billy’s death when he takes away the treasure map, or escapes on the island away from the pirates, or comes back to the stockade to tell everyone about Ben Gunn, or taking the ship away to safety all by himself after killing his attacker. He is the one responsible for the treasure hunt as he takes the treasure map and shows them to the right people, i.e., the squire and the doctor who can afford to go on a treasure hunt.

The doctor for his concern for the people’s health no matter where they are: as soon as he looks at the island, he understands that malaria flourishes there; although he has been driven away by the pirates from the stockade, the doctor carries a flag of truce and comes there to treat the wounded men and those suffering from malaria. While leaving, he warns John Silver to be careful about squalls when digging up the treasure.

The squire for his active part in arranging the treasure hunt trip; he travels to Bristol and buys a fine schooner, hires a sea- captain and a cook who helps him to recruit the rest. He is foolish enough to reveal to everybody on the ship that they are on a treasure hunt but is careful with the treasure-map. Along with the doctor, he is able to kill right on time the pirates who were accusing John Silver and Jim of treachery.

Long John Silver for his cunning mind and plots in spite of being one-legged. He takes the lead in plotting against the squire and his associates, and later on the island, cleverly fights against them, and get hold of the treasure map. When the other pirates want to kill Jim, he shrewdly stops them from doing so. At the end, he is the only one, apart from Ben Gunn, of the earlier Captain Flint’s team who gets a share in the treasure.

Ben Gunn is an interesting character because he has survived on the island for three years. He is a member of Captain Flint’s team and knows about the treasure. It is because of his efforts that the squire, the doctor, Capt. Smollett, Long John, Jim, and a few other pirates manage to survive and get a share of the treasure.

Question 2.
The story also has many interesting incidents. Which of those incidents do you like the most? And why?

4. Jim’s taking the ship away all alone. This marks a significant phase in his life because he kills his attacker and boldly takes the ship to a safe place. Jim grows in every manner during the incident.

5. Jim’s return to the stockade only to find Long John and his friends. On this occasion, Jim makes a very brave speech which pleases Long John and makes him retain this boy as a member of his group. Otherwise, Jim would have been killed by the pirates.

6. The discovery of the hollow gap below the tree by the pirates and Jim. The pirates despair and get ready to kill Long John and Jim, when the squire and his associates arrive right on time and save John and Jim. Thus the latter group gets to share the treasure with Ben Gunn.
