The Town by the Sea Summary in English

The Town by the Sea Summary in English

On December 25, 2004, the director was in Port Blair en route to Delhi on an official visit. He had left his family in Malacca and 26th morning he was woken by the shaking of the earth. His mobile rang and he knew it was his wife. He cut the call and decided to call back when the shaking stopped. When he called her back, there was no response from her.

He saw the water in the harbour rising very rapidly and he ran to the higher ground with others. The director called the Govt, office in Car Nicobar. When this call was responded they told Malacca was very badly hit and there were some survivors. But there was no news about his family.

Director came to know in the afternoon that his 13-year-old was found clinging to the rafters of a church. He spoke to his son that night, his son told that their house dissolved and he was carried away by the wind. But his mother and sister just disappeared. The director’s heart broke when his son started crying.

He was able to get on a flight next day with the help of local administration. After going near his house he spent the day searching through the stones and found many possessions of his. But he could not find his wife and daughter.

The writer went with the director when he visited Malacca’s second time. There he saw the maximum possible damage done to life and property but nature was left unharmed. They visited the district library. They then went to the place where his house stood once. He could find the slides and other household things. But he looks only at the slides with him.

He explained that his house was made of wood and only the found atiars was concrete. His wife was an English teacher and had applied for transfers, which never came through. She could have achieved more if he had given her opportunity.

The writer was thinking about what he would have done as a husband, father, or human being in the director’s situation. What he would have kept off the past. This nobody knew how they would have reacted to this kind of situation. The time is a great healer and any amount of words or talking is not going to lessen someone’s pain and misery.
