The Story of Dharmavyadha Summary in English

The Story of Dharmavyadha Summary in English

Kaushika was a sage. He had learned the Vedas. He wanted to surpass everyone in learning. He left his home and aged parents. He went to a forest to continue his studies. One day, when he was studying the Vedas sitting under a tree, a crane disturbed him by its loud twittering. Kaushika looked at the bird in anger. At once, the crane was reduced to ashes. Though he felt sorry for the death of the bird, he was happy and proud of his ascetic power.

He went to a town to beg for alms. He stood before a house and cried out aloud ‘Bhavathi Bhikshandehi’. The mistress of the house was attending to her husband’s needs, who had just come home. So, she took some time to bring alms to Kaushika. Kaushika was angry with the lady for making him wait for a long time. He glared at her, but nothing happened. The lady said that she was not a crane to get burned by his anger. Kaushika wondered how she had come to know about the crane. The lady told him that he had learnt the Vedic lore and mastered it, but he did not know the secrets of Dharma. She told him to go to Mithila, meet a person called Dharmavyadha, and learn the mysteries of Dharma from him.

Kaushika went to Mithila and met Dharmavyadha in his shop. Dharmavyadha was a meat seller. He welcomed Kaushika and asked if the learned lady had sent him. Kaushika was stunned. He did not understand how the lady and Dharmavyadha knew things about him without anyone telling them. He had considered himself great, but he realized that it was not so. He understood the greatness of the lady and the meat seller. He stood before Dharmavyadha with folded hands and requested him to teach the secrets of Dharma.

Dharmavyadha, in all humility, said that he was an ordinary man and he could only tell him the path he followed. He said he was continuing his family profession of selling meat, but he had never killed an animal, did not cheat in business, had never uttered a lie. He was truthful, patient, merciful. He never boasted about himself. He would not be elated in happiness and depressed in difficulties. He visited holy places, took bath in sacred rivers, and engaged himself in prayer and tapas. More than all, he respected his teacher and served his aged parents with devotion. These Were the principles of Dharma, according to Dharmavyadha.

Dharmavyadha took kaushika to his house and showed him his parents. Dharmavyadha prostrated before his parents. Kaushika also bowed to them. He realized how foolish he was. He told Dharmavyadha that till then he had considered himself as the only learned person and after listening to Dharmavyadha his arrogance had evaporated. He said he would go back and serve his aged parents and try to walk on the path of Dharma. Kaushika took leave of Dharmavyadha and spent his days serving his parents and teaching the Vedas.

This story was narrated by Sage Markandeya to Yudhishtira. After telling the story, the sage said that in every division of people there are enlightened souls who are able to guide even the learned scholars.
