Robin Hood and Little John were two troublesome men. They attacked the pedlar because he did not give them one half of his pack.

Answer:
Little John very arrogantly called the pedlar . for a fight. He drew out his sword and fought with the pedlar who too fought very bravely. They fought until sweat was pouring down and Little John grew tired. He had to plead the pedlar to stop fighting.

Answer:
When Little John asked Robin Hood to fight the pedlar, Robin Hood very arrogantly said that he could defeat both the pedlar and Little John. Then withdrawing his sword, he fought with the pedlar till blood flowed from both of them in streams. Yet, Robin Hood could not defeat the pedlar and he requested him to stop fighting.

Though Little John and Robin Hood lose to the pedlar, they do not get angry but admire and respect him for his skill and expertise. Later Robin Hood comes to know that the pedlar is his cousin. Therefore they stop fighting and join together merrily and go to the tavern to drink and eat: Robin Hood and Little John respect the pedlar for his bravery.

Little John and Robin Hood are chivalrous men. How do they take their defeat? Was it right to do so? Why?
Answer:
Little John and Robin Hood are very brave men who are sure of their strength. So they challenge the pedlar for a duel. Both of them get defeated by the pedlar in turns. Instead of getting upset, they admire the pedlar for his prowess. This shows their chivalrous nature.

It is the right thing to do because a person who is braver and stronger deserves to be respected and appreciated. That is the characteristic of a chivalrous person.

Question 2.
If Robin Hood and Little John had not shown humility, how do you think the ballad would have ended?
Answer:
If Robin Hood and Little John had not shown humility at their defeat, they would have been completely defeated by the pedlar or maybe even killed.
Instead of merry friendship and a happy ending, the story would have ended in a tragedy with either the defeat or death of Robin Hood and Little John.

The pedlar stands for integrity. Do you agree with this view? Justify your answer.
Answer:
The pedlar does not get scared seeing Robin Hood and Little John and does not give up his wares when they demand. Instead, he challenges them to a duel. He does not accept defeat there also but fights and overpowers them. When he is asked to reveal his identity, he tells them the truth story. He says that he is from Green Woods and he was forced to flee because he had killed a man who had ventured into ( his father’s land. This reveals that he ready to do anything to safeguard his family. These reveal that he stands for integrity.

The Bold Pedlar and Robin Hood Summary in English

One day the legendary Robin Hood and his faithful follower Little John met a pedlar with his wares, in the Nottingham forest. They asked what wares, he carried and he said that he had several suits of bright green silk and a couple of silken bowstrings. Little John immediately said that half the wares were his. The pedlar refused to part with his wares and boldly called them for a duel.

Little John fought with the pedlar who also fought back bravely. When Little John could no longer fight, he requested his master Robin Hood to fight. Robin Hood and the pedlar fought for long and hard but still the pedlar remained undefeated.

Robin Hood was full of admiration for this brave pedlar and asked him his name. But the pedlar refused to reveal his identity until they both revealed theirs. After they both introduced themselves, the pedlar revealed that he was Gamble Gold of gay green woods who had fled from his country for killing a man in his father’s land. Robin Hood recognized him as his mother’s sister’s son – his cousin and all three merrily went to a tavern and they wined and dined there.
