In this article we come to know about the youngest recipient of India’s highest civilian award for bravery, the Ashoka Chakra. We come to know the life of Neeija Bhanot who worked as a flight attendant for Pan Am Airlines based in Mumbai, India. She died while saving passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on September 1986.

Neerja was appointed as an Air hostess and joined Pan Am Airline in 1986. She was in the Pan Am Flight-73 which was hijacked by armed terrorists after it landed in Karachi at 5.00 a.m, from Mumbai. P.A-73 was on the way to Frankfurt and next to New York. Neeija alerted the pilot about the hijack.

The three-member cockpit of the crew of pilot, copilot, and Flight Engineer was able to flee from the aircraft but Neerja couldn’t. Being the senior cabin crew member, took charge and controlled the aircraft. The men who hijacked the aircraft were from the Palestinian Abu Nidal terrorist organisation and were backed by Libya. A passenger identified himself to the terrorists as being an American the terrorists shot dead this passenger because they wanted to identify the Americans. So they told Neeija to collect the passports of all the passengers.

Neeija was bold enough to hide the passports of the 40 Americans on board. After 17 hours the hijackers opened fire and set off explosives. Neeija was brave enough to open the emergency road and helped the passengers to escape. She never thought of escaping from there, but helped the passengers to escape.

When she was engaged in rescuing the passengers, especially while protecting three children from danger, she was shot. She died and was recognised internationally as “the heroine of the hijack” and she was honoured with India’s highest civilian award for bravery. It was received by her brother Aneesh Bhanot. The department gave ‘“Ashoka Chakra” in her memory because of her loyalty to the passengers of the aircraft in distress. She exhibited her indomitable courage grit and sacrificed her life to save others.
