II. Define the following :

1. Biosphere: Biosphere is the fourth component of the earth which spreads in the water bodies, in the atmosphere, and in and on the earth. The earth is the only living planet in our solar system.

2. Ecological imbalance: Etiological balance is very essential for the survival of all kinds of plants and animals. If we destroy forests it is not the destruction of forest only. But it will lead to the destruction of many insects, birds animals, and the environment. So perfect balance should be maintained to safeguard this earth as well as the biosphere.

3. Global warming: The increase in the temperature of the earth for the last few decades is called global warming. This is mainly because of the greenhouse effect and trapping of heat by the atmosphere.

4. Greenhouse effect: The use of fossil fuels is increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap the heat radiated from the earth. This caused the increase of temperature of the earth. This is called the greenhouse effect.

5. Ozone depletion: Ozone is a thin layer of gas found in the stratosphere. Ozone absorbs ultraviolet rays and protects all form of life on this earth’s surface. Synthetic chemicals are released from many modern types of equipment like refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. deplete ozone. The ozone depletion caused the ozone hole.

6. Acid rain: Nowadays a large amount of sulphuric acid and carbon monoxide are mixed in the atmosphere. When the raindrops pass through the polluted atmosphere it causes acid rain. It is damaging both the living organisms and non-living organisms of the earth.

III. Term to remember :

1. Pollution: Pollution is the unfavorable alteration of our surroundings, wholly or partly by human action through direct and indirect effects. Pollutants are substances that cause pollution.

2. Environment day: It occurs on June 5th every year for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment first held in 1974. It has been the flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution and Global warming to sustainable consumption and world life crime. This day is also called ‘Eco day’.

3. Climate change: The temperature of the earth is increasing slowly over the years. The world getting warmer, climatic zones are shifting, glaciers are melting and sea level is rising due to global warming. The rainfall with poisonous acids like sulphuric acid and carbon monoxide is caused when the raindrops to pass through the polluted atmosphere.

4. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC): In recent years the use of air conditioners, refrigerators, sprays, and deodorants is destroying the ozone due to the synthetic chemicals released into the atmosphere, primarily chlorofluorocarbon. The ozone depletion has caused the ozone hole.

5. Earth hour and Earthday: It is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for nature. The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for an hour from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m on a specific day towards the end of March as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

6. Save Earth: To save the earth we must educate people, formulate awareness programmer, utilize resources judiciously, control pollution awareness through education, symposiums, seminars, skits, films, summits.
