The Enchanted Pool Summary in English
The enchanted pool is an episode of the Mahabharatha written by C. Rajagopalachari. One day, in the twelfth year of their stay in forest, the Pandava brothers wandered deep into the forest in pursuit of a deer and became more weary and thirsty. Yudhistira asked Nakula to climb a tree and see whether there was any pool or river nearby. Nakula climbed a tree and said that at a little distance away, he could see water plants and cranes. Seeing this, Nakula understood that there must certainly be water.
Yudhistira sent Nakula to fetch some water to drink. Nakula was glad when he saw the pool. He thought of quenching his thirst before taking water for his brothers. But he heard a voice which ordered him to stop and not to drink water, and further asked him to answer his questions before drinking the water. But Nakula did not heed to the warning and began to drink water. At once, he felt terribly drowsy and fell down, to all appearance looking dead.
Yudhistira sent Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima, one after the other. They also ignored the warning of the voice, and drank the water arid fell down dead.
Yudhistira was worried and went in the direction his brothers had gone for fetching water. He saw his four brothers lying on the ground near the pool, who appeared as dead. He was shocked. He also got into the pool to quench his thirst. At once the voice without form warned him that his brothers had died because as they did not heed to his words. The Voice asked Yudhistira to answer his questions first and then quench his thirst.
Yudhihistira understood that those words were of a Yaksha and guessed what had happened to his brothers. He saw a possible way of redeeming the situation. Yudhistira requested the bodiless voice to ask the questions:
The voice put questions rapidly one after another. It asked, “what makes the sun shine every-day?” Yudhistira replied that it was “Power of the God”. “What rescues a man in danger?” it asked. Yudhistira quickly answered that “Courage rescues a man in danger”.
Like this, the Yaksha posed many questions and Yudhistira answered them all. In the end, Yaksha asked Yudhistira that one of his dead brothers could be revived. Whoever he chose would come back to life. Yudhistira asked Nakula to rise. Yaksha asked Yudhistira for the reason of choosing Nakula in preference to Bhima or Arjuna. Yudhistira answered to Yaksha that Kunthi and Madri were the two wives of his father. He was the son of Kunthi and has survived. So, to be fair, he had asked for Madri’s son Nakula to be revived.
Yaksha was pleased with Yudhistira’s impartiality and granted that all his brothers would come back to life. It was Yama, the Lord of Death, who had taken the form of the deer and the Yaksha so that he might see his son Yudhistira and test him He embraced Yudhistira and blessed him and disappeared.
