Was Rama right in sending Sita away? Discuss in groups and present your opinions to the class.
Answer:
No, Rama was not right in sending Sita away. Rama knew and for that matter every one knew that Sita was a great lady. But nobody knew about the wife of the washerman. Nobody knew what situation made a great lady to live in another’s custody. The servant had only heard the words spoken by the washerman and seen the beating. But he did not know the reality. Though this incident had some implications, and Rama had to follow Rajadharma, he need not have punished Sita in such away.

Justice Above Self Summary in English
‘Justice above self’ is a story written by Munshi Premchand. This story tells about the impartial judgment given by the ‘Panch’ in the village Panchayat. Jumman shaik and Algu Chowdhary were good friends. They were helping each other. Both were respected in the village. Jumman had an old aunt who had some property. She transferred this property to him to look after her. After some years Jumman and his wife started to illtreat her. They were reluctant to give even a little food to her. She bore all these ill-treatments patiently. But later she became impatient. She requested Jumman to give her a monthly allowance to set up a separate kitchen. Jumman rejected her demand. The old lady became angry and decided to take her case to the village panchayat.
She went on meeting people explaining her case to them. Some sympathised with her, others laughed at her. A few others advised her to adjust herself with her nephew and his wife. At last, she came to Algu Chowdhary and requested him to come to panchayat to speak the truth. Initially, he was reluctant. But her words kept ringing in his ears.
The panchayat was held under the old banyan tree. Jumman stood up and said “The voice of the Panch is the voice of God.” He asked his aunt to nominate the head Panch. She nominated Algu as the Head Panch. She stated that “The panch knows neither enemy nor friend”. Jumman felt very happy because Algu may give judgment in his favour. The old lady explained her case to the Panch. Algu asked Jumman to say his defense. Jumman narrated about the transfer of property to him to look after his aunt. After some years quarrels began between his wife and aunt. Aunt had demanded a monthly allowance, which he could not pay.
After consulting others, Algu announced that Jumman must pay his aunt a monthly allowance, or else the property goes back to her. Now the friends were seldom seen together. The bond of friendship was broken. Jumman saw Algu as an enemy and wanted to take revenge.
After some days, Algu sold his bullock to Sanju Sahu, a cart driver of the village. Sahu agreed to pay the price of the bullock in a month’s time. It so happened that the bullock sold by Algu, died within a month. After several months, Algu demanded Sahu to give the money. But Sahu refused to pay price of the bullock as it was dead. So Algu took the case to the panchayat. The panchayat was held under the old banyan tree. Algu stood up and said “The voice of the panch is the voice of the God, let Sahu nominate the head panch”.,Sahu proposed the name of Jumman. Algu’s heart sank and he turned pale because he thought that Jumman may take revenge on him.
Jumman realized his responsibility as a judge and the dignity of office. Both Algu and Sahu presented their cases. Then Jumman stood and announced that Sahu should pay Algu the price of the bullock. When Sahu bought the bullock, it was in good health. The death of bullock was unfortunate, but Algu cannot be blamed for it. Algu could not control his feeling. He said “Victory to the panchayat” Jumman came to Algu and embraced him. He told Algu about his realization as a Panch. A panch knows no friend or enemy, but only justice. Algu was also in tears. His tears washed away all the dirt of misunderstanding between them.
