सिलिया Summary in English

This Heart felt story has been written by Dr. Susheela Takboure. In this she explained how a poor girl of low caste came up and rised to the high level, after facing different types of problems in her child hood. It is lesson to the modern society and an uplifting of the low cast.

Shylaja, Syliya or Shillu Rani was a low cast girl. She was little dark, innocent, serious and simple character. She was good in studies and sports. In V stand tournaments were conducted in the neighbouring town.

Syliya along with her classmates and sports teacher went to that town to take part in the games. She got first place in running race and chair race and also Kabadi team won for which she was a captain.

As the V standard competition got over early, her sports master told her – “you go to Hemalatha’s sister’s house, which was situated in that town and come in the evening and we all together go back to our village”.

Accordingly Hemalatha Thakur took Shyliya to her sister’s house. There, her sister, sister’s husband and sister’s mother in law felt happy seeing them. Mother-in-law brought two glasses of water for both. But on knowing the caste of Sylia, she pulled back the glass and went inside. This hurted the feelings of Shyliya.

She fell in thought – why she took back the glass of water? She observed the rnean mentality of the Mother-in-law. Even thought Shyliya was very thirst. She felt bad without water, she had born in the low caste. This was the only reason for not getting water to drink. In the evening Hemalatha’s sister’s husband brought and left her near the shepherd’s colony.

When Shyliya was at the age of 11 years, she had another incident happened in her life. Her aunt’s daughter Malathi was her classmate. But she was courageous and able to take any action. One afternoon she was very thirsty and immediately she pulled out a pot of water from the shepherd’s well and drank. Shyliya advised her not to do so.

But she took a bold step, even thought her house very near. She would have taken the water from her house only. On seeing this, Shyliya got upset and thought, what was the mistake of Malathi ? At last she had thirsty and had water.

Shyliya worried much of this incidence. In the year 1970, when Shyliya was studying in XI standard, she saw the advertisement appeared in Nayee Dhuniya stating that one low cast girl is need. The famous youth leader of Lucknow, the capital of M.P. wants to marry a girl belonging to low caste and he wants set an example to the society. But condition is that she must be studied upto X standard.

All the leaders, wel-wishers, businessmen and scholars came to Shyliya’s house and advised Shyliya’s mother-don’t loose this opportunity, this is a best offer for your daughter etc., After the lengthy discussions

Shyliya’s mother came to the conclusion that – “she will not give her daughter to the leader. It is only a show. He will marry today and leave tomorrow. This type of unnatural respect is not needed to my daughter. She can built up own future.

On listening the words of her mother, Shyliya got double strength and encouragement. All the above three incidences made her to get rid of these ill treatments at any cost. She got flashed new ideas other than the old customs immediately she thought if I got a good leader, who can guide me, I will remove all these social evils.

She disliked to live like slaves and animals. She decided to get high education and know the root causes of this social sins. By my virtue I will take this society to the heights. Afterwards, all her ways got opened. She started to work according to the time and situation. She travelled widely to all the corners of the Country and enlighten the situation.

She made her struggle for about 20 years and remained unmarried. After that great success, one day she has been invited by a prestigious Literary society for an honour at a prestigious place. She has been made to sit on a beautiful chair, where two-two guards of higher caste stood on her sides by holding purified of water bottles. She got the honours of great scholar, famous poet and a great social reformer.

The Minister put a woollen shawl on her shoulder and presented the Certificate of honour and a momento. After drinking two sips of water she started to deliver her meaningful speech. She was none other than Shyliya, who born in a low caste. She tried, worked hard and achieved the goal. She fulfilled the saying of Swamy Vivekananda “awake, arise and stop not till the goal is reached”.
