Describe the different stages of transformation of the foot after it is condemned to live in a shoe?
Answer:
Nerudas poem works out the contrast between colourful dreams and humdrum reality of life. The poet has used the foot as a metaphor for the child and describes the dreams and realities of life. In the beginning, the child is unaware that it is a foot and would rather be a butterfly or an apple. When it grows, it faces difficulties of life as walking on stones and bits of glasses, ladders and the paths on the rough earth.
After facing all these struggles of life, it ‘ understands that it cannot become a butterfly or an apple. The foot feels defeated when it is inside a shoe, though in the darkness of the shoe, it never sees anything. It is like a blind person in darkness. The foot becomes rough and exposed to the difficulties in life. It knows no rest as it continuously walks through markets, mines and other places. The foot has to work and walk all life facing challenges not able to realize its dreams and unaware of the bitter truth of life.

Question 22.
Give an account of the complicated way of bowing in Japan.
Answer:
In Japan, bowing is almost like a mania. Everybody keeps bowing to everybody else, with great solemnity and natural, inimitable grace. Bowing is akin to shaking hands or kissing the cheek as is normal in the west. It is quainter, more formal, more oriental with complex rules and hierarchies but very much infectious. Foreigners may find themselves bowing, but with amusing, unintentional blunders, either bowing too deeply or not deeply enough or to wrong persons at the wrong places.
The differences in ranks, standing, age, social position are subtely reflected. There are clear cut differences in positions and basic rules inside the family too. But Japanese carry out these complicated. hierarchical rituals without difficulty and with great aplomb. Bowing is part of their culture and ingrained in them since birth.

Question 23.
How did Romeo and Juliet express their romantic love feelings to each other in the poem ‘Romeo and Juliet’?
Answer:
Though Romeo and Juliet belonged to rival families their love is as immense as earth and as wide as sky, there is no black spot in their love. It is difficult to say whose love is more intense because in true love we could not discriminate the lover’s love for each other. But to think Juliet’s love is more intense because generally it is easy for boys to love, but for girls it is difficult when they are of rival families.
Though Juliet knew this, she did not fear her family, she knows that if her family were to know about their love, definitely Romeo and Juliet would be killed. But she did not fear and she says if she is killed her beloved would be cut into little stars to glitter in the sky and make the sky brighter than day. This is the evidence to justify that her love is more intense than Romeo’s by her statement that his glow would be brighter than day and if he stays among stars the world would definitely forget to worship the sun and spend the night peacefully in her beloved’s presence. In this way, her love made his death immortal, and his life and her love permanent on the earth.

Inspite of all their efforts, the king and his team failed in punishing the criminal. How is it narrated in the story ‘Too Dear’?
Answer:
Monaco, when a murderer was caught, initially judges, prosecutors and jurymen assembled to decide on the punishment for the culprit. After long deliberations, they condemned the culprit to have his head cut off as per law. The problem was that Monaco neither had a guillotine nor an executioner. Hiring was quite expensive and there were meetings again. They altered the death sentence to life imprisonment. All Monaco had was a small lock up room. More committees were formed to sort this out. They found a place and hired a guard to watch over the criminal and fetch him food. As this was costing too much, the next committee dismissed the guard, and waited for the criminal to run away. He did not do so telling that his reputation had gone and nobody would hire him. Finally, he agreed to leave when offered regular pension. All these considerations were carried out in meetings after meetings.

“Everything is fair in love and war”. How do you substantiate this statement relating to the attitudes of Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo in the play ‘A Sunny Morning’?
Answer:
Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo were deeply in love when they were young. They used to meet each other regularly in the night under the window of Laura’s Villa called ‘Maricela’ near Valencia. Unfortunately, Laura’s parents decide to marry her to a merchant. And one -night when Gonzalo goes to meet Laura, the merchant comes there unexpectedly, and blames and humiliates Gonzalo. A fight ensues between the merchant and Gonzalo, and the merchant gets badly wounded. Gonzalo runs away to Africa.
Gonzalo writes many letters to Laura but he never gets any reply. Then he realises that he had lost her love. But she was waiting for Gonzalo’s return, and she did not get to read his letters, because her parents had intercepted and destroyed them. She waited for Gonzalo to return in vain and after two years married the merchant. After many years, they meet in their old-age in a park at Madrid. Gonzalo was suffering from gout and his eye-sight was poor.
They have been coming to the same park without running into each other. One day Gonzalo disturbs Laura while she was feeding pigeons. Once they get to talking with each other, they realise their true identities but refrain from reveal mg to each other. In this way, it is ironic that even though they are eager to meet each other they pretend to be somebody else and do not disclose. They are happy with the sweet memories only.
