We should not spend too much time in watching T.V. and become addicts. We must watch good programmes only. Excessive viewing of T.V. can harm the eyes, the nervous system and make us lazy and inactive.

Computers:

Computers are machines which can do work very fast. They have no brains of their own. They perform the tasks according to the programming done by us. Computers mainly consist of a monitor, keyboard, central processing unit and a mouse. They are operated by electricity.

They are used for booking tickets in railways and travel agencies. Computers are used for printing. They are also used for research. Computers are used by children for studies also.

Some people feel that due to the advent of computers, there is reduction in employment. On the contrary, computers are creating a lot of new employment opportunities. So computers are very useful for mankind.

Pollution:

Addition of harmful substances to nature is called pollution. Pollution is of different types.

The smoke coming out from the chimneys of industries and the silencers of vehicles cause air pollution. We can check this by reducing the polluting factories and using good quality fuels and engines. We can also plant trees which will convert carbon-di-oxide into oxygen. We have to develop and use solar power to reduce air pollution.

Water pollution is caused by leaving untreated industrial wastes into rivers, tanks and lakes. This should be avoided by all means. The wastes must not be discharged into water bodies directly. The wastes should be treated in a proper way. In oceans, water is polluted by the leakage of oil from oil wells and during the movement of ships. Proper measures and care should be taken to check the leakage of oil.

When we throw plastic waste and other undegradable waste, it causes soil pollution. Soil pollution makes the soil infertile. Most of the people in India depend on agriculture. Hence soil

pollution should be avoided if we want the farmers to progress. Noise pollution is caused by industries, honking of vehicles, using loudspeakers and bursting crackers. We should avoid using horns near schools and hospitals. We should not use loudspeakers after 8 pm and their sound should be minimised. Bursting of crackers also should, be controlled. Pollution affects the health of all living beings. All sorts of pollution, spoils the ecology and should be avoided.

Newspaper:

Newspaper is one of the most important means of communication in the world. There are newspapers in almost every language.’ Newspapers have helped to spread knowledge. Newspapers give news, views, reviews and sometimes previews. The word NEWS is interpreted as North, East, West and South. It means that the newspapers provide us information and news regarding different subjects from all the directions.

Newspapers also give us articles on all kinds of topics such as political, social, economic, business, commerce, sports, education, health etc.

Newspapers have different columns devoted to different topics. In them, we have matrimonial, editorial, readers, employment, women’s, children’s and other columns.

Burning social problems are discussed in the newspapers. Elaborate articles by experts and specialists appear in them. Then the reader’s views and opinions are also published in the readers column.

Newspapers are very powerful vehicles. They carry advertisements which attract the attention of customers. Advertisements are essential to run a paper. Newspapers can make or change a government. They act as a powerful voice of public opinion. They also contain book-reviews of literary, historical and other books by scholars.

We must not be misled by the views expressed in newspapers. We must weigh them on the scale of reason, as some newspapers may be prejudiced. These days big political parties have their own papers to popularise their views. But normally newspapers are important means for spreading literacy.

Children can enjoy the cartoon columns in newspapers, children can send their drawings to be published in the newspapers. So, newspapers are very useful to our society.

Population explosion:

Population is the resource of any nation. We are proud that every sixth man in the world is an Indian. But we must also be ashamed that nearly 50% of our population is below the poverty line. During the middle of the 18th century we were 200 million. In 2001, our population was at 102 crores. In 2011, we were 122 crores. Our population is growing, rather exploding, in a rapid growth, mode.

The main reasons for the population explosion in India are low death rate and high birth rate. Good medical facilities, nutritious food and hygienic conditions and eradication of epidemics have helped the death rate to come down.

Poverty, Illiteracy, early marriage, polygamy, widow marriages, longing expectation for a male child, are contributing to population explosion. Poor people expect more children and believe that children are gifts of God.

Population explosion has created a shortage of food and housing. Overpopulation creates poverty and unemployment problems. Government is unable to provide drinking water, education, medical and transport facilities to the growing population.

Small families must be encouraged. Education should reach all. Child marriage and early marriage must be stopped. Family planning and one child – one family concept should be followed by all irrespective of religion and Status. Education about population must be given to elders as well as children. Population explosion is as dangerous as a bomb. Everyone must join their hands to overcome this problem.

Dowry system:

The system of dowry in our country has become a monstrous evil. The murdering of brides by their husbands or their families, has become very common in many parts of the country. At first, the dowry system served an important purpose. The Hindu law did not entitle a daughter a share in the parental propery. It was therefore thought necessary to send some financial assistance to the bridegroom. It helped him to settle down. There was no bargaining either by the bridegroom or his parents.

Now the situation has changed completely. In the marriage market, bridegrooms are auctioned. The rich want to marry their daughters to doctors, engineers and other highly placed government officers. As they have enough money, they can afford this. However the poor cannot afford that. Countless families are ruined. Aman feels cursed and certainly burdened if he has too many daughers.

So, dowry is a Social evil. Legally we can not solve this problem. By the combined efforts, this problem can be solved. Youth should educate about the problems of dowry and they should resolve not to take or give dowry.
