Women and children were kept in very pathetic conditions without proper food or attire. Thus the Nazis treated the Jews with utmost cruelty and barbarism.

Dear Margaret,
Hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits. How I long to see you and our city! I cannot even reveal where l am hiding because if the terrorists come to know of it, that will be the end of all our lives.
We are about 20 of us living in a small but in the remote forest area. The area is so overgrown with trees and bushes that it is difficult for humans to locate us. The place is swarming with insects and reptiles and many of us are ill with various kinds of fever. There are no medicines and the condition of a few is very grave. The place is infested with snakes too.
It is very cold at nights but we fear to light a fire as it might show people where we are hiding. We also do not have warm clothing. There is absolutely no connection with the outside world and also no hope of our ever getting out alive. I’m writing this letter and leaving it here so that in case people ever find out our hiding place after we pass away, you’ll at least know the horrors we underwent.
We are living without hope, with the constant fear of being killed. Only God has to help us out from this painful predicament. Please pray for our safety.

1. The Diary of Anne Frank has been published in 19 languages including German, and sold millions of copies. It has been made into a play and has won the Pulitzer Prize. It has been made into a movie too.
2. At the time of Hitler, Otto Frank was a banker with two daughters. When Hitler assumed leadership of Nazi party, he shifted his business to Amsterdam in Netherlands.
3. When Hitler invaded Netherlands, Otto Frank, along with his family and another family of three members, moved to live in secrecy in an annexe above his office. There they lived for two years till they were detected by Nazi officers and arrested.
4. Anne was emotional and strong-willed. She was also an extrovert who felt terribly handicapped by the forced imprisonment in the annexe.
5. She starts maintaining a diary in order to express her feelings and also record the happenings of the times. The diary is kept a secret from everyone.
6. When they are arrested by Nazi policemen, they are taken to a concentration camp. The men are separated from- the women. Mrs.Otto Frank dies very soon from exhaustion, whereas the girls contract if typhoid and die a few months later.

8. Otto very sadly goes through the diaries, and writes out copies for his mother and a close friend. Through the friend, it reaches a history professor who writes an article on it in a Dutch newspaper. After reading that, Otto’s friends urge him to publish the diary. Two well-known publishers refuse to publish it, whereas a third one agrees to, and sells more than 150,000 copies of it.
9. Million copies sell at Britain, Japan arid the United States. People of all ages start writing to Otto Frank, and he replies individually to each of them.
10. The diary is made into a play which is enacted in seven German cities. There are packed audiences everywhere, and people confess that they realize how bad Nazism, racial persecution and Hitler were, only then.
11. Memorials, organizations and funds are set up in her memory. Youngsters flock to her grave at Bergen-Belsen camp to pay tributes to her, and to declare that such a ‘diseased and inhuman hatred’ should never arise among human beings again.
12. Anne Frank had expressed her desire to be a famous writer one day. After her death, she becomes much more than that. She becomes immortal, and a source of inspiration and courage to oppressed communities all over the world.

Louis (“Loe”) de Jong (24 April 1914 – 15 March 2005 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch journalist and historian specializing in the history of the Netherlands in World War II and the Dutch resistance.

This lesson is about Anne Frank, the teenage girl who wrote a diary because she had no other friends, and thereby recorded a world of information about the Nazi activities. She died at a very young age, and her diary went on to become something much more than a diary or a record of troubled times. It became an inspirational story for the young and old, and was made into movies and plays.
Anne Frank’s father Otto Frank, a banker, moved to Netherlands when Hitler became powerful and assumed leadership of Germany as the head of the Nazi party. Later, when Hitler invaded Netherlands too, Otto Frank, along with his wife and two daughters, shifted to an annex above his office. There they lived with another family consisting of a boy and his parents, for two years in secrecy. The three teenagers could not atfford to make any noise or go out of the building.
Their only connection with the outside world was through the radio and four members of Otto Frank’s staff. Out of sheer loneliness, Anne starts writing in her diary and hiding it from everyone else. Two years later, their hiding place is detected, and all the people are arrested and taken in cattle- trucks to a death-camp in southern Poland. The men are separated from the women, and the mother, Mrs.Frank dies very soon. The girls are starved and taken to another camp where they are afflicted by typhoid fever. Both of them die very soon.
The father, however, manages to survive and is freed by the Russians When he copies home, he meets his former typist who gives him Anne’s diaries. The reading of these diaries gives Otto Frank a new purpose in life. An article about these diaries inspires Otto’s friends to have all of them published. Though two publishers refuse to publish it, the third one publishes it, and immediately it becomes popular worldwide.
Jews all over the world and many people from oppressed countries connect to it easily and write to Otto Frank to say so. Otto Frank devotes all his time to reply to these letters. A play based on the diary is enacted in many German cities and it is watched with great interest by Germans who admit that they have wronged.
Many memorials are set up in her name, and youngsters pay tribute to her grave in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Her life serves as a message of courage, tolerance and optimism to the whole world.
