Valentina Tereshkova and Kalpana Chawla, both of them went into space on fact-finding missions. Valentina went alone in a spacecraft called Vostok VI. She went round and round the earth for three days. She returned to the earth safely. Kalpana was the first Indian born woman to rocket into space on a NASA fact-finding mission on November 16, 1997. Along with her, there were six other astronauts. They made 252 orbits of the earth and remained in space for about 400 hours. They conducted more than 80 experiments in space. During their return journey, the spaceship developed some technical snag and broke apart barely 11 minutes before it was scheduled to land, killing all the crew members.

The First Woman in Space Summary in English

This is the saga of an adventurous woman: Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to travel in space. On 16th June 1963, she went round the earth in the spaceship Vostok VI at 18,000 miles an hour. This achievement made her the world’s first spacewoman. No one thought that a village girl of humble birth would reach such great heights.

Valentina was born on March 6, 1937, at Maselennikovo in the Soviet Union. She was from a humble background. Her father was a tractor driver. He died at the front in World War II leaving behind his wife and his little daughter. Valentina was fondly known as Valya. The family was in utter poverty and Valya could not have smooth and regular schooling. When she was seventeen years old she worked at a tire factory and then at a textile mill to help her mother.

She graduated from a trade school in 1960. She had trained herself in parachute jumping at Yaroslav Aero Club. Her courage helped her to get selected for the cosmonauts’ training. Valya was greatly inspired by Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight. She also wanted to fly like him.

At the space school, with her devotion and perseverance, she surpassed her fellow trainees. She learnt everything about rockets. After months of rigorous training, she was selected to go into outer space. Her dream became a reality.

The day and the time was fixed for the launching of the spaceship Vostok VI. Everything went on according to plan. Valentina started circling the earth at an altitude of 113 to 144 miles from the earth at a speed of 18,000 miles an hour. She talked to’her fellowmen from outer space about her thrilling experience. She felt very proud. Millions of people around the world danced for joy when they heard about her going round the earth.

Valentina remained in the ship moving round and round the earth for three days. During that time she felt normal. She ate well, slept well and even sang songs. She observed things, made notes and sent the information to the ground station. She enjoyed the landscape of the earth, River Volga and other beautiful sights. Finally, she herself’ steered the spaceship and landed safely by parachute in Soviet Central Asia. After landing she said, “It is very nice to be a guest, but, it is always better at home. When I landed, I felt joy at being at home again”.

Valentina was very happy over her success in the experiment. The spaceship travel was an experiment to find out whether women could also withstand the hardships and strains of rocket flight and weightlessness. Valentina was interested in music and literature. She loved reading books. And, above all, she loved a happy and quiet home life.
