Thomas Alva Edison,
A most unusual boy,
Never really bothered much
With any childish toy.

His teacher thought he couldn’t learn
And sent him home from school,
But Tommy’s mother knew for sure
He wasn’t any fool.

He worked as newsboy on a train
He learned to telegraph,
The way he concentrated
Made some people laugh.

Thomas Alva Edison
Had inventions by the score.
In his laboratory
He kept inventing more.

The phonograph, electric light
(With fuses, sockets, too),
A super storage battery
And the movies were a few.

If not for Mr. Edison
How dull our lives would be!
We might not have the radio,
The X-ray, or TV.

The Lighthouse Summary in English

KSEEB Solutions for Class 6 English Prose Chapter 1 The Lighthouse 14

In this lesson, we come to know about the inventions and uses of the lighthouse through the dialogues between Rajiv and his father Madhav.

Madhav took his son Rajiv to watch the lighthouse. They made a small trip. Madhav told his son to look at the lighthouse. Rajiv wanted to know the uses of the lighthouse. Lighthouse was a tall strong building in the shape of a tower with powerful lights at the top.

Madhav pointed out the uses of the lighthouse.

  • It helps the sailors to know where the land is and can locate the place.
  • The lighthouse warns and guides the sailors.

Then Rajiv asked about the working of the lighthouse. Madhav replied that modern lighthouses use powerful electric lights.

Madhav also told that wood fires would be lit in high places on the shore. Later plenty of candles were used. They used the glass to protect the candle from the air. Earlier the sailors had the danger of dashing against high rocks and unable to locate the place. But the lighthouses helped them. In the past, many fishermen were lost in the sea and were unable to return home.

So to help these people, some wise men came with the idea of the lighthouse. They gathered logs and dry branches. They set fire. The elder people laughed at this, but the wise men were succeeded in keeping the fire burning. Then Rajiv had his favorite ice-cream and both went home.
