II. Answer the following questions briefly :

Question 1.
Why is the Earth is called ‘Living Planet”?
Answer :
Earth is called a living planet because of its suitable distance from the Sun, range of temperature, life-supporting gases, atmosphere, water cycle, etc.

Question 2.
Why are the Northern and Southern hemispheres called Land and Water Hemispheres?
Answer :
The Northern Hemisphere has 60 % of land and 40 % of water. Therefore it is called the ‘Land Hemisphere. There is 81% of water and 19% of land in the Southern Hemisphere and so it is called the water Hemispheres.

What are the latitudes and the longitudes?
Answer :

  • Latitudes: Latitudes are imaginary lines that run-round the earth horizontally from east to west.
  • Longitudes: Longitudes are imaginary lines that run vertically from north pole to south pole.

Mention the difference between local time and standard time.
Answer :
The time according to the longitude of a place or according to the position of the sun at the place is known as the local time. In order to avoid confusion of local times, many countries follow uniform time is called standard time.

III. Define the following :

  1. Unique planet: The earth is the only planet in the solar system which has a biosphere. In no other planet in the solar system, the atmosphere is not found for the creation of the biosphere. So it is called the ‘Unique planet’.
  2. Size of the Earth: The Earth is the fifth largest planet in the Sun’s family. The diameter of the Earth is approximately 4 times greater than the Moon and it is around 107 times lesser than that of the Sun.
  3. Geoid: The Earth’s shape is often described as Geoid, which literally means ‘Earth shaped’. The Earth is flattened at the poles and bulges at the equator. The Equatorial diameter of the Earth is 12756
  4. Continents: The land bodies of the Earth are known as continents. There are seven continents, namely Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.
  5. Prime Meridian: The meridian passing through Greenwich has been chosen as Prime Meridian. It is marked as 0° longitude. There are 180 of longitudes to the east of Greenwich and 180 to the west.
  6. Indian Standard Time: In India, 82½ East longitude is considered as the standard Meridian of the country. It passes through Allahabad of Uttar Pradesh. The time based on this meridian is called the Indian Standard Time (1ST) It is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of G.M.T.

  1. Living Planet: The earth is the only living planet in the solar system which has a biosphere.
  2. Equator: The imaginary line that runs through the middle of the Earth’s sphere divide into two equal halves or hemispheres is 0° latitude. It is called the Equator.
  3. Arctic Circle: 66½ North Latitude is called the Arctic circle.
  4. Antarctic circle: 66½ South latitude is called the Antarctic circle.
  5. Zonal time: The whole globe is divided into 24 time zones. The time in each zone differs from the other by only one hour.
  6. International Date Line: The 180° longitude which is supposed to pass through the Pacific ocean is considered as International Date Line.
