My Beginnings Summary in English

My Beginnings Summary in English 1

This lesson is taken from“ Straight from the heart” an autobiography of Kapil Dev the famous Indian cricketer. Kapil narrates his childhood experiences.

Kapil Dev was born on 6th January 1959 in Chandigarh. His mother was a simple woman. He grew up among six brothers and sisters. He says by referring his early life that our beginnings never know our ends.
His mother regales him with tales of his naughty behaviour. She could not control him. He could not sit still. His ambition was to travel around the world and drive a Mercedes Benz Car. By God’s grace both of his two ambitions have been fulfilled. But at the time of his boyhood days, those dreams seemed like “castles in the air”

Like other children, Kapil was also trying to bunk school, and save up enough money to go to a new movie or have a plate of chicken chowmein with his friends. He was amusing with his friends by stealing the fruits off their neighbor’s trees. One particular lady, a neighbor had a beautiful garden. In it, she had papaya and pomegranate trees. He and his friends were often trying to pick the fruits of the trees. One day, Kapil and his friend had climbed over the wall and were perched on the tree when the lady walked out with some guests. As she was entertaining them for tea right under the papaya tree, he and his friend had to sit still for nearly two hours on the tree till the tea party ended.

My Beginnings Summary in English 2

Lady had ninety – two pomegranates on the tree in her garden. She counted them every day because she knew the mischief of the children. Once she went to Delhi for two days. Kapil and his friends took down all the ninety-two pomegranates, ate whatever they could and distributed the rest. After returning, she complained to Kapil’s mother, who wallopped him severely. Later, the lady used to tell others with great pride and affection about the mischief of Kapil and his friends.

Kapil and his friends tried to ride the horses that were left in the huge open green areas to graze. After innumerable falls and many frights, Kapil learnt to ride and control a horse. Once they had mastered how to ride the horse, they became more courageous and ventured out of the fenced area with the horSes. Nobody noticed their venture. Once, he had taken the horse in his back garden. It was very easy to ride the horse up to his home, but it was very difficult to get the horse through the small doorway. He did not anticipate this. So, he was caught within minutes of their arrival. His father’s chiding discouraged him from entering the grazing field again.

Kapil was not very studious. He used to spend his time in playing games and participating in athletics. He went to a small local school. Cricket, basketball, football, table tennis and hockey were the games offered there. Kapil was fairly good at all games, but very good at athletics. He dreamed of becoming a footballer. He worked hard at that game and was selected to play for his school. His friends played cricket.

They convinced Kapil to change his game. Kapil took a decision to change his game. He is always grateful for his friends. He began to spend a lot of his time on the cricket field. He played in a number of inter-school tournaments and came to be noticed as “a promising lad” in the local press. But it was all merely fun to start with. He could never have imagined where cricket would take him. Later he became a famous professional cricketer and captained India to World Cup glory in one day cricket.
