It is a small play which narrates the friendliness and kindness of a Bishop that changes a convict into an honest man. The bishop is seated for dinner and his sister, Baptistine is ready to serve. Just then a convict enters the room and introduces himself that he is Jean Valjean. He has been imprisoned for nineteen years. He had walked for miles. He had not eaten anything for three days and requested-them for food. Bishop told his sister to put another plate and arrange for a bed. She carried put the order with fear. Bishop called him a friend.

The convict reminded the Bishop that he was a convict. Everybody had told him to get out calling him a ‘dog.’ He told that the bishop must be a great soul and thanked the bishop. Bishop asked his sister to bring out the silver candlesticks and light them. She serves them to soup, cheese, mutton, and a large loaf of bread. The convict devours. Bishop tells the convict that he must have suffered a lot. Convict agrees that he was once a man, but now he was not a man only a beast. He had lived in hell for nineteen years. Bishop asked the convict what made him to live in the galleys. Convict told his story. He had lived with his sister and her seven children. She was ill and they had no food and he could not get any work. The children were starving. So he stole some bread. He was caught and sentenced to the galleys. They had chained him like a wild animal. He was at last free to starve. Bishop asked him to take rest as he was tired.

Jean Valjean was so exhausted that he feel asleep immediately. He woke up in the middle of the night. He remembered his nineteen years imprisonment for stealing bread. He had tried to escape many times. Each time he was caught, the court had increased his sentence. Once he was free he had asked for work. But no one was willing to take him. Jean Valjean thought about the silverware that was laid on the table for dinner. He saw that bishop was sleeping. Suddenly, Jean Valjean went past to the cupboard, and took the silverware and jumped out of the window and ran away.

In the morning, Baptistine informed the Bishop that the silver was stolen. Bishop was very sad and told that he had withheld the silver wrongfully for a long time. It belonged to the poor. Just then, there, was a knock at the door. A servant and four policemen with the convict bound, entared the room. Police had caught the convict. Bishop told the servant that he had given the silverware to the convict who had spent the night there. So the Police release the convict and let him go.

Bishop gives the convict the silver and Candlesticks and ask him to go in peace. Bishop tells him to come again. He can always come in and go out by the front door. The doors are open day and night. Bishop asks him to promise that he would use the silver to become an honest man. Convict sobs and promises to become a human again and not a wild beast. Later, Jean Valjean led the life of an honest man remembering the words of Bishop. He strove for the cause of the oppressed, downtrodden and destitute.
