Question 1.
Describe the military achievements of Babar.
Answer :
Babur laid the foundation of the Moghul Empire in India by his conquests. In 1526 A.D. Babur was invited by Daulathkhan to defeat Ibrahim Lodhi. This battle was called the First Battle of Panipat. Thus he became the king of Delhi. Then he defeated Rana Sangram Singh of Mewad and he fought against Mohammad Lodhi in the Gogra battle. By these victories, he had established his empire in India.

Explain the characteristics of the Sher Shah administration.
Answer :
Sher Shah was an able administrator. His administrative reforms are notable. The present administrative system in India has adopted many aspects of Sher Shah’s system.
- Central and provincial administration : He divided his vast empire into different sarkars, sarkars into Parganas and paragons into villages. The present-day Indian administrative system has adopted this system of decentralization.
- Land Revenue System : In those days, land revenue was the major source of revenue. In addition to land revenue, many other revenue sources were in force. But today, we are getting more income from other sources rather than land revenue.
- Police Administration : Sher Shah introduced the police system to look after internal law and order and to maintain peace. Even today we are having good police force to maintain law and order to lead a peaceful life.
- Roads : He was the first emperor who understood the importance of National Highways. The present government of India is giving more importance to transport and communication.
- Religious policy : Though he was a Muslim, he was tolerant of other religions. The present Indian Constitution declared that India is a secular state.

What are the areas won -by Akbar?
Answer :
Akbar was a great conqueror. At the age of 14, with the help of his commander ‘ Bairam Khan, he defeated Hemu in the Second Battle of Panipat and conquered Delhi.
With his mighty army, Akbar conquered Malva, Jaipur, Gondawan, Chittoor, Ranathambur, Kalinjar, Gujarat and Bengal. In the battle of Haladighat, Akbar fought against Rana Pratap Singh.
With his famous generals, Man Singh and Asaf Khan, he defeated Rana Pratap Singh. Kashmir, Sindh, Orissa, Baluchistan, Kandahar and Ahmednagar provinces were conquered by Akbar. Thus, Akbar became the emperor of entire North India.

Describe the contributions of Shahjahan to art and architecture.
Answer :
Shahjahan can be called the “Prince among the builders”. He was responsible for the constructing many buildings. He constructed the Taj Mahal at Agra. This is built-in pure white marble in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Begum. Moti Masjid was built by him.
A big fort in red stone called Red Fort was built by Shah Jahan at Delhi. He was the man who engraved a beautiful throne which was called Mayura Simhasana. Like this, he was a famous builder and his age can be called “Golden Age of Moghul Art and Architecture”.

Describe Shivaji’s system of administration.
Answer :
Shivaji was not only a conqueror but also a capable administrator.
He had a cabinet of eight ministers called ‘Ashta Pradhans’. Peshwa was the head among them. In addition to ministers, there were other officers to help and to look after lower units of administration.
Shivaji’s revenue system was favorable to farmers. He abolished the Jahangir revenue system. Chouth and Sardeshamukhi of the land tax types of land taxation were in practice.
The village panchayat head were the judges of the villages. The judgment was given on the basis of Hindu scriptures.

Explain the achievements of Bajirao.
Answer :
Bajirao I was an unparalleled warrior. He expanded his kingdom by conquering Gujarat, Malwa. He also conquered Salcet and Basin from Portuguese and Janjira from Siddhis. Pune became his administrative centre. Bajirao I not only ruled with efficiency but also re-established the glory of the Maratha empire. Hence he was called Shivaji-II.
