Journey to the Top Summary in English
Bachendri Pal was the first Indian woman to climb the summit of Mt. Everest. She loved wandering in the snow-clad Garhwal Himalayas. She dreamt of flying in aeroplanes and meeting famous people and this always amused her family.
She applied to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering for the Basic Mountaineering Course after her B.A. graduation. Brig. Gyan Singh was her mentor. He was also the Director of N.A.F. He set up‘Bhagirathi Seven sisters Adventure Club’.
She was selected for the Indian Everest Expedition in 1984 and that was her first real expedition. She had to face many setbacks including an avalanche and injuries. She reached the peak on 23rd May 1984 She conquered the summit of Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for the highest peak in the world. She felt her dream had come true.
At this exciting moment, she thought about her parents who had imbibed and inculcated the value of struggle and the value of efforts. She was awarded many awards from many places. Indian Government awarded Arjuna Award.
She put together all her experiences in her Autobiography “Everest My Journey to the top” She is currently employed as Deputy Divisional Manager. Her life shows how hard work can make a person achieve his goals and dream and rise to greater heights in life.
