A Girl Called Golden Summary in English
This is a poem about Elizabeth Cuthbert, a great sprinter hailing from Australia. At the 1956 David Bateson Summer Olympics held at Melbourne, she won Gold Medals in the 100 and 200 metres along with the 4 x 100 metres relay, at the young age of eighteen. In the 1964 Olympics held in Tokyo, she won the Gold medal in 400 metres. She is the only woman in the Olympic history, to have won Gold medals in all the three sprint events namely 100, 200 and 400 metres runs. For her achievements, she was hailed as the ‘Golden Girl’. David Bateson, has penned this poem in her praise, highlighting her courage, determination, passion and perseverance.
‘ She was running when her schoolmates were walking; started sprinting when they ran; was training while they were playing. It was so much fun for her, when she could feel the fresh air and, sunshine and breeze blowing through her hair. Her coach could recognize that she was someone special, who was born to run. Even when her muscles were aching, she was putting in some extra effort, knowing that winning does not come on a platter – one has to toil and earn it by hard work.
When the Melbourne Olympics came around, she was ready for the challenge. Even though she was still in her teens, the cheers of the crowd spurred her to great glory and gold medals – a time to remember and cherish for the rest of her life.
