Happy Cure Summary in English

Happy Cure Summary in English

A foolish king lay dying. He imagined and said that he was at death’s door. But the truth of the matter was that he was suffering from having nothing to do. He was being bored to death. He would not admit this. He groaned and moaned and complained of sharp stabs in every muscle and sticking pains in every bone in his body. Physicians and Surgeons came from far and wide. They checked him up. But they could find nothing wrong with him.

But the king told that the Physicians and Surgeons were- dolts. He asked the minister to bring ordinary doctors. Ordinary doctors came from hither and yon. They checked him up. But even they could find nothing wrong in his health. King told in rage, that ordinary doctors were idiots. He threatened that the next one to examine him and find nothing wrong, would have his ears cut off and his nose shortened. This did not stop the coming of the doctors and the surgeons and the physicians. The people were in despair. Such an epidemic of heads without ears and faces with shortened noses were never seen.

Finally, a simple old woman came to see the king. She peered into the king’s face for a long time. She said that king was suffering from a strange and rare disease. So rare and strange, that no name existed for it. King was very happy that he was a sick man. He asked the^old woman if there was any medicine for his sickness. The old woman suggested the king that he needed sleep for one night in the shirt of a happy man and he would be cured immediately.

The King summoned the Captain of his guard, his bravest soldiers, best courtiers, messengers and heralds and commanded them to bring him the shirt of a happy man, and they should not return without it.

His men traveled far and wide, from east to west, from north to south, across seas and deserts, through cities and over mountains, from one end of the kingdom to the other. But nowhere could they find a happy man. They sent long reports to the King.

The long reports said that the people in the east might be happy if the king didn’t tax them so heavily; The people in the west might be happy if they didn’t have to work so long and so hard; The people in the north might be happy if the King was interested in them and their welfare. The people in the south might be happy if the King would notice their industry and faithfulness and would reward them. The king read the reports hastily and threw them away.

One day a little stable boy came across a stranger who was happily singing. The boy asked the stranger what made him sing so merrily. He replied that he was singing from joy. He loved his fellow-men. He owned but little and wanted less. He was a happy man and he was singing. The boy told him about the sickness of the king. He told that their King could be cured if he could sleep one night in the shirt of a happy man. So, he asked the stranger to give him his shirt. The man burst into laughter and said that he did not possess a shirt. He gathered his tattered coat about him and walked off.

The little stable boy ran to the King and said. “The cure was right here all the time- right at hand – right on the palace grounds. I found him-he said that he loved his fellow-men, owned but little and wanted less. But he didn’t possess a shirt.”

Then the King hung his head in shame. He told himself that he could cure his own folly. He resolved then and there to be a good King, to help his people, to rule wisely and well. He never fancied himself ill again for he became too busy for such folly, and he lived to a ripe old age.
