Monday Morning Summary in English
It was Monday morning, Tom Sawyer was feeling miserable. Monday mornings always found him so, because it started another week’s slow ‘suffering’ in school. Tom lay thinking. Presently he found himself pretending that he was sick, then he could stay at home. He mentally examined every part of his body. He found no ailment. He investigated again and detected some slight pain in the stomach. But the pain soon grew feeble and died away.
He investigated further and realised that his upper front tooth was loose. If he told his aunt about it, she should pull it out, and that would hurt. So he thought that he would hold the tooth in reserve for the present, and investigated further. Tom remembered the doctor telling about a certain thing that laid up a patient for two or three weeks and threatened to make him lose a finger. So he eagerly drew his sore toe from under the sheet and held it up for inspection.
Now, he had found a promising ailment, he had only to produce the symptoms. So, he fell to groaning with considerable spirit. He should, first of all, get Sid, his younger half brother to tell his aunt about his ailment. But Sid slept on soundly. Tom groaned louder and imagined to feel the pain in the toe. But there was little response from Sid. Sid snored on. Tom was furious. He called out, “Sid, Sid,” and shook him. Sid got up and enquired Tom what had happened to him. Tom was groaning and moaning.
Sid got out of the bed and want to Aunt Polly and told her that Tom was dying. She didn’t believe it. But she fled upstairs with Sid and Mary on her heels. Her face grew white and her lips trembled. When she reached the bedside, she gasped out and she enquired Tom what had happend to him. He told her that his sore toe was mortified. The old lady sank down into a chair and laughed a little, then cried a little. She told him that she would get him to stop the nonsense.
The groans stopped and pain disappeared from the toe. The boy felt a little foolish and he said to Aunt Polly that is seemed mortified and it hurt so much, he didn’t mind his tooth aching at all. Aunt Polly asked him to. stop groaning and decided to teach him a lesson. She asked Mary to bring a Silk thread and some burning coals from the kitchen. Tom understood the situation and pleaded with Aunt Polly not to pull his tooth out and said that he did not want to stay at home from School.
But, by that time, the dental instruments were ready. The old lady tied one end of the silk thread to Tom’s tooth with a loop and tied the other to the bed post. Ther she seized the pan of burning coals and suddenly thrust it almost into the boys face. He jerked back and the tooth hung dangling by the bedpost. Then the old lady said to Tom that his tooth was out, and he should go to school and not frighten her anymore.
